Rule based rates are calculated based on the products in an order that belong to the group the rate is applied to. They require a rate title, and you can also add an rate sub-title. You can also set a free shipping override for each rate.
For By Items, By Weight, and By Price types, you can choose between a table based rate, or a special shorthand style rate. These options can be toggled when you are adding or editing each rate.
Free Shipping
This method has nothing to configure other then a shipping title and an optional subtitle. The rate will always be $0.
Flat Rate
Just enter a flat rate amount to charge
By Items
Per Item / Additional Item
Use this option instead of a item table. This option allows you to set an amount to charge for the first item from the group and then an amount to charge each additional item.
To have a per item shipping charge of $5, set the first item amount to $5 and set the each additional item amount to $5.
Table Based
You can set ranges of number of items and an amount to charge. Add additional rows to the table to set different ranges.
As an example you can use the table based option to say, from 1 item charge $X, and then from 6 items on $Y, etc.
By Weight
Per Pound / Additional Pound*
Use this option instead of a weight table. This option allows you to set an amount to charge for the first pound from the group and then an amount to charge each additional pound.
To have a per pound shipping charge of $0.80, set the first item amount to $0.80 and set the each additional item amount to $0.80.
*Your shop’s default weight unit will be used to configure weight based rules. So if you are using kgs, you will see kgs as the weight units in these rules.

As an example you can use the table based option to say, from 0 lbs charge $X, and then from 2lbs on charge $Y, etc.
By Price
Percent of Total Price

You can also add an optional minimum and/or maximum shipping price when using the percentage amount.
