Package settings allows you to specify different box dimensions per group of products.
This feature is really powerful compared to Shopify's built in package dimension features. Shopify only allows you to set one default package dimension that is used to for all shipments, and that same package dimension is used regardless of the number or type of products in an order.
The app allows you to set package dimensions unique to each product group/shipping zone/carrier method.
Change the default package size
- On the carrier method edit page, locate the section Package Settings
- Click the Edit button that shows when you hover the existing package labeled Up to 1000 Items 5 x 5 x 5 inches. ( Use the “...” on mobile to reveal the edit button )
- Change the values for length, width and height.
- Add the empty weight of the package ( optional )
- Click Save Changes.
What Does 'Up To 1000 items' mean?
This value means, no matter how many products from this group are present, send one package to get rated by the carrier, that will be the specified dimensions of this package and the entire combined weight of all products.
One package per item
The most common use of Package Settings is to charge a lot more shipping for orders containing multiple quantities of products that always ship in their own box.
You can do this by changing up to 1000 items to up to 1 item.
Example:
- You sell a large art prints, that weight 4lbs. that always ship in their own package.
- A customer orders 5 art prints.
- If your package is set to Up to 1000 items, then the app will ask for a rate for one package weighing 20lbs ( 5 items x 4lbs ).
- Then, edit the package and change up to 1000 items to up to 1 item.
- Now, the app will ask for the rate of shipping 1 package that weights 4lbs, and then multiply that price by 5.
Package sizes based on quantity of items
Let's say you ship Mugs.
You have 3 different package sizes that fit different number of Mugs.
- 4x4x4 fits 1 mug
- 4x8x8 fits 4 mugs
- 8x8x8 fits 8 mugs
Add two more packages to the Package Settings, using the Add Package link. You should have three packages set-up with the following settings.
- Package A | # of items: 1 | Dimensions: 4 x 4 x 4
- Package B | # of items: 4 | Dimensions: 4 x 8 x 8
- Package C | # of items: 8 | Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 8
Outcomes:
-
Customer order 5 mugs.
The app request rates for one Package B ( fits 4 mugs ), and one Package A ( fits 1 mug ). -
Customer orders 50 mugs.
The app requests rates for six of Package C ( fits 8 mugs x 6 packages = 48 mugs ), plus one Package B ( fits the 2 remaining mugs ). -
Customer orders 49 mugs.
The app requests rates for six of Package C ( fits 8 mugs x 6 packages = 48 mugs ), plus one Package A ( fits the remaining 1 mug ).
You can set-up as many packages as you like to split your products intelligently by QTY. Each package needs a unique value for '# of items'.
